copper outdoor lanters: which one?!

A while back, I posted a mini makeover plan for my front porch to freshen up for spring and boost curb appeal and while I made some headway – I’ve since painted my front door high gloss black, my adirondack chairs sport a fresh coat of crisp white paint and a pair of ginormous ferns flank the entrance – the whole mini makeover began with the intention of replacing my existing lantern lights with a pair of oversize copper ones.  I didn’t technically need new lighting but, whenever I get my mind set on something, forget about it.  I have tunnel vision and an uncanny ability to justify why we need them until we get them.  With a new baby on the way this time last year, however, I just couldn’t pull the trigger on more than $1000 worth of outdoor lighting.  Fast forward a year later and the same lights I fawned over are on MAJOR sale!  Now all I need to decide is if I want the traditional lantern, which is what I fell in love with in the first place, or the wall mounted lantern.  Your input would be greatly appreciated!  To refresh your memory, here is the original design board I created for my porch:

Here are both the traditional lantern and the wall mount.  The sheer size of the traditional (24 inches!) and the classic shape has me thinking that’s the way to go, but, despite its smaller size, I love the wall mount, too.  What do you think?

For reference, here is a shot of my front porch.  I think the copper will look beautiful with the gray, black and white color palette and the punch of emerald green from the ferns:

Which do you think will look best?

And while I’m asking, if anyone has seen a woven door mat like this that’s bigger than a 2×3, I’d love to know!  Lowe’s and Target both carried them in a 3×4 foot size years ago, but they are pretty hard to come by now!

Hope you’re off to a great start today! And THANK YOU ahead of time!

I vote for the wall mount. But either will look great.

Love the wall mount, but don't think it's different enough to justify the change. I really like the ones you have!

I vote the traditional lanterns! While I love the wall mount, I think the traditional lanterns would be fab for the style of your home! Would you mind sharing the sources for both? I thought I recognized them from Lowes, but when I checked online they don't seem to be on sale 🙁

The front entrance to your home is lovely and inviting already! But since you asked…Though both options are desirable, in my opinion the wall mounted lanterns have more heft and offer more of a welcoming statement.

Can you buy both and return the ones you like the least? As for the doormat…there are some on Etsy, but super expensive. Have you thought of making your own? Here is a tutorial. http://www.marthastewart.com/269741/braided-doormat If you can make the monkeys knot, you can make this for sure!

Angie – I have seen instructions to make my own, but I've hesitated only because we get some heavy foot traffic in here! Lynn, Leslie, Stacey and Elizabeth, thank you so, SO much for your sweet comments and input! It is much appreciated 🙂

I love the color of your home. Do you know what this gray is called? Thanks!

Your front porch is beautiful! I would definitely vote for the traditional lantern! By the way where can you purchase them? Thanks!
    Cheers, Krista

Krista and Elizabeth – I updated the post with links to where you can buy both versions; they are from Lowe's!

I am pretty sure I saw that doormat–large size–at World Market last summer!! Can't wait to see the lanterns you choose!
