how to make your hydrangeas last for weeks

Like every other decor-obsessed blogger, I've got a major softspot for fresh cut hydrangeas.  Those big, billowy blooms get me every time I walk into the grocery store but I've had such a hard time getting them to last longer than two or three days lately that I stopped buying them altogether the last couple of months.  I reached out on Instagram a while ago to see if there were any surefire tricks I was missing and when one reader shared her tried and true secret and how it extends her hydrangea bouquets by sometimes THREE WEEKS (!?) I just had to try it!  It worked SO well that I had to share it with you guys, too!  It's so simple you just won't believe it!

These blue and white hydrangeas from my baby shower were looking a little sad, so I decided to give it a try over the weekend and see if I couldn't bring them back to life again:

All you need is a large bucket; fill it with cold water and a bunch of ice:

Next, submerge your blooms, heads first, completely under water, keep them in a cool place (I left mine in the sink in my laundry room) and forget about them.  That's it!  I usually do this at the end of the day and let them sit in the ice water overnight:

Look how much they've plumped up by the next morning!

I hope you're all off to a great start this week!

britt's baby shower

My sweet friend Brittani is expecting her second baby boy at the end of summer and so, to celebrate his upcoming arrival, I hosted a small and intimate lunch for her and a few friends at her house this past weekend! I always have the best intentions to take a bunch of pictures during events like these, but it's usually too crazy so this time, I set up as much as I could the night before so that I could snap some pics before everyone got there the next day.  I tend to think that simple is not only easier but can also be way more elegant (as much for big dinner parties as for baby showers) so I kept lunch simple (chicken salad, fresh mozzarella and tomatoes, English cucumbers and salami slices, arugula salad, strawberry shortcake) and really focused on a beautiful table setting.  The prettiest pink garden roses, pops of soft blue, lots of texture from beautiful rattan chargers and gold rimmed stemless champagne flutes.  Everything turned out amazingly well and the momma-to-be was celebrated in style (which was pretty important to me because she is one of the chicest people I know!)  Here are a few snaps of our luncheon:

Chargers - Pier 1 / Dinner plates - TJMaxx / French wine glasses - Crate and Barrel

Gold rimmed champagne flutes - West Elm / Chambray napkins - HomeGoods /

Pinstriped tablecloth - TJMaxx

Hope you're all off to a great start this week!

outdoor dreaming: gil schafer

We've been visiting my dad at the beach since last Friday and it's been heaven.  The temperature is in the 70's, the sun is shining and, I've got green on the mind, which is fitting, being that today is St. Patty's Day (Happy St. Patty's Day to all my Irish friends!!)  I am literally aching for my lawn to turn green and to get down and dirty planting blooms and perennials.  Architect Gil Schafer's outdoor spaces are as elegant and stunning in their simplicity as the rooms he creates indoors and I find myself referring to them constantly lately as inspiration for my own landscape this spring.  Boxwoods, emerald grass as far as the eye can see, oversize planters spilling with beautiful hydrangeas, stacked stone retaining walls, gravel walks and driveways - classic American style at its best.  And how gorgeous does all that green look with white houses and black accents?  Stunning.  While I am not going to be repainting my house anytime soon (or ever, if the hubby has anything to say about it) Gil's work is still such an inspiration and sets the bar pretty high for simple, classic landscapes:

Who or what is inspiring your garden or landscape dreams this spring?

my baby shower

Over the weekend, three of my close friends threw the most FABULOUS baby shower in my backyard for me and baby girl!  I'm still on such a high, between how gorgeous everything looked and having had all the most important people in my life be able to make it!  Everything was absolute perfection...from the gorgeous coral, white, linen and gold color scheme and vases of hydrangeas everywhere to the yummy brunch menu and sit-down setting.  To say I am overwhelmed by everyone's generosity is definitely an understatement - baby girl is one loved little one already!  I got a little trigger happy with my camera right before everyone started to arrive, so there are a ton of images here (in typical fashion, I had a hard time picking my favorites, everything was just so perfect!)

Boxed animal crackers were the perfect favors:

French toast in shot glasses with syrup - just not brunch without French toast!

As soon as you walked out the back doors, a little mimosa station greeted guests - the antique table is actually a great find that is going in baby girl's nursery to use as a changing table!

Going with the nautical feel, I made these monkey's fists and tied them with grosgrain ribbon as prizes for games:

Instead of a book, guests wrote words of wisdom on little pieces of paper and stowed them in a bigger demijohn bottle-couldn't have been sweeter!

Thank you, again, to everyone who came to the shower and to Holly, Brittani and Lizette for an amazing spread!! xo

a little bit of green + a whole lotta love

The last two weeks have been draining and emotional, so I apologize for the sporadic blog posts, but thankfully, I'm blessed with fabulous family and amazing friends to help pick my up by my bootstraps when the going gets tough. My sweet hubby surprised me last week with these gorgeous pink gladiolas....they are even more beautiful in a blue and white ginger jar, don't you think?  Every time I walk into the living room, they make me smile:

These beautiful hydrangeas were a lovely and unexpected gift from a dear friend this's amazing how such a simple, sweet gesture can transform your whole mood!

Thank you to my cherry-flavored lifesavers-you know who you are! My life is so much sweeter with you all in it!  Happy Hump Day!
