5 favorite (and easy!) summer-inspired diy's

My idea of the perfect DIY is one that is easy, inexpensive, relatively quick to execute and doesn't look like something you actually made yourself.  (Had to add that last part because it's so true!!)  If you're in the mood for some easy, summer-inspired DIY's to try, I've got a few for you that will have your friends and guests wanting to know your secrets!  I've blogged about these before, but I thought it would be fun to update the list and add a couple new favorites:

This rope-wrapped vase is one of my favorite diy's, as much for the fact that it's INCREDIBLY easy as it is because it looks so beautiful with simple summer blooms! I made a bunch of these for the centerpieces at my cousin's wedding in Newport, Rhode Island, a couple years ago and they looked absolutely AMAZING  filled to the brim with blue and white hydrangea!

Turn 12 feet of rope from Lowe's or Home Depot into a nautical addition to a bookshelf or coffee table in minutes, or, impress your friends with mini versions of these monkey's fist knots to take home as favors from your next barbeque or get together!  I made a few of these to give away as prizes for the games at my baby shower a few years ago and I'm still getting compliments and comments on them!

Two quick, light coats of liquid gold leaf turn these oyster shells into chic salt and pepper shakers that will have everyone raving at your next dinner party!  I found the mini spoons on clearance at Sur la Table and sprayed the shells with a coat of food safe poly before filling them with salt and pepper.

Give your gallery wall a little refresh and add some texture and softness to your favorite photos or artwork by gluing linen fabric to plain white mats.  These were the perfect addition to a few favorite pieces of art on the gallery wall in Lydia's nursery; I spray painted the frames high gloss white and love the contrast!

My hubby made the oversize Versailles planters that flank my front door for Mother's Day a couple years back and they are still one of my favorite gifts ever.  While this isn't exactly something you could just whip up in less than a half hour like the rest of my picks here today, it's one of my favorite diy's for the fact that these are HUGE and bring so much drama and interest to my front porch (and they look amazing with bright green ferns), but the cost to make these is a fraction of what it would cost to buy something of similar size.

blue + white + natural for summer

I can't think of a more quintessential color combination that so perfectly represents summer than blue and white, so I thought I'd start the week off with a little roundup of some beautiful blue and white decorative accessories that are on my radar right now!  And, of course, you know I had to add a little natural texture to the list, as well.  This pair of splatter lamps is so gorgeous in person, they come in a bunch of different color ways and the price is so good; loving these woven placemats to dress up an alfresco dinner and I'm obsessed with this woven side table!  This woven carafe is on sale and is monogrammable, which pretty much makes it the perfect hostess gift or birthday present for that special friend who loves to entertain.  This horn and woven serving set is TO DIE FOR (also on sale!)  These ridge vases add so much texture and interest, they would look just as striking by themselves on a bookshelf as they would holding flowers or fresh greenery as a centerpiece:

placemats / splatter lamps / bamboo mirror

pillow / carafe / serving set / vases

bar cart / ice bucket / napkins / woven side table

Hope you're all off to a great start this week!

summer entertaining must-haves

Summer is in full force around here and there is nothing I love more than having friends over for a swim, a bite to eat and a few cocktails.  While most times it's impromptu and usually eaten off paper plates while chasing kiddos, there are still times I like to put a little more effort into a chic table setting, even if dinner is going to be buffet-style.  I always pull out my favorite pieces that I use year-round, like simple white serving platters, my budget-friendly water hyacinth chargers, bamboo servers and woven tumblers and add even more natural textures for the warmer weather with wicker wrapped serving dishes, a rattan ice bucket and a chic chip and dip tray.  To keep everything simple and easy, my oversize clam shell adds interest and a coastal, summery vibe and is a great alternative to flowers as a centerpiece.  With all the natural textures, I like to keep plates and serveware white; it's such a laid back but beautiful feel for a summer get together!

Ada woven carafe / Simple white platters / Woven tumblers / Wicker wrapped serving dishes /

Soare chargers / Atlantis large clam shell / Bamboo servers / Rattan ice bucket / Votives

Rope bottle opener / Water hyacinth chip and dip tray

Happy Independence Day from my family to yours!  I hope you all enjoy an amazing day, filled with friends, family, too much food and a cocktail or two (or three!)  I'll be back up and running after the long, slow weekend. Cheers!

on my radar: goodies for summer

We just got back from a week at the beach and now, aside from lamenting over the decade we lived right next to the water, I'm so beyond ready for summer!  I definitely don't believe you need to live by the water in order to reflect one's love of the sea in your home - especially if you pick elegant furnishings and accessories that are anything but kitschy, so I've rounded up a bunch of goodies I'm loving lately that definitely fit that bill!  From a natural bistro counter stool that gives me heart palpitations and the extra large version of the Atlantis clam shell I already have (this one is a MONSTER!) to gold leafed chain book ends that I'm completely OBSESSED with and a white lacquer and raffia coffee table that is bananas, any of these picks would bring a bit of a beach vibe to any style decor:

Riviera Counter Stool in Natural / Gold leaf chain link book ends / Extra large Atlantis clam shell /

Marble wine holder / Rattan ice bucket / Gold bamboo mirror / Bone tray / Brass knot bottle opener /

Link pitcher / Shell cheese knives / Cabot square coffee table

What are you loving lately for warmer months??
